Do you constantly feel the urge to pee during the day or wake up multiple times at night to urinate? You could be experiencing frequent urination and nocturia. These conditions don’t just disrupt your sleep — they might indicate deeper health issues like infections, diabetes, or an overactive bladder.

What Is Frequent Urination and Nocturia?

Frequent urination means needing to urinate more often than usual — typically more than 7–8 times during the day. If you’re going every hour or constantly hunting for a washroom, your body is trying to tell you something.

It is different from polyuria which is defined as “Transient  or persistently increase in urine volume >3 L/day which is caused by often excessive water drinking, diuretic therapy, cold weather etc and pathologically in diabetes, renal dysfunction.

So urinary frequency(small volume) differs from polyuria(large volume).

What Is Nocturia?

Nocturia is the medical term for waking up once or more during the night to urinate. It disrupts your sleep, leaving you tired and irritable the next day. Not fun.

• Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

In men over 50, an enlarged prostate can press on the urethra and cause dribbling or nighttime urination.

For treatment doctor may give finasteride, tamsulosin , tadalafil etc.
